Kaiser Chiefs band member Ricky Wilson tweeted as the Yorkshire band arrived in Newcastle for their Valentines Night gig at the O2 Academy saying “Today’s stop on world tour. Newcastle. Happy Val-on-Tyne

Support acts for the night were The Fixers and local band Frankie & The Heart Strings. Both bands were getting the sell out crowd suitable warmed up for The Kaiser Chiefs. Both acts were equally as good, however I have to say Frankie & The Heart Strings interacted more with the crowd and really got the crowd excited for the main act.

9.30pm soon arrived and the Yorkshire band hit the stage to a sell out crowd in the O2 Academy. Treating the crowd to hits like ‘Ruby‘, ‘The Angry Mob‘, ‘Na Na Na Na Naa‘ and ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less‘. As well as tracks from the brand new album ‘The Future is Medievil‘.

Front man Ricky really got the crowd jumping when the band kicked into ‘Never Miss A Beat‘ and ‘Oh My God‘, however it was ‘Predict A Riot‘ that had the Geordie crowd jumping around and took the roof off the Academy.

I have never really been a huge fan of The Kaiser Chiefs, however have always liked a few tracks that they have released. However, after attending the gig last night – it’s clear to see why the band are still going strong after 16 years !!! Having performed at their beloved Elland Road and other major venues, this tour has proved that no matter how big a band gets – you can still return to your roots and perform at the small venues that may have helped you on the rise to fame.

The only person I have ever seen live and had me laughing at numerous times due to their antics on stage was Robbie Williams, last night Ricky joined that list. He was climbing on the side of the stage and the front of the stage barriers having to be held up by Security at one point. However what made me really laugh was when he casually climbed off stage mid song and made his way to the bar! He then proceeded to order 2 bottles of Blue Wicked and continue to finish performing the rest of the song standing on the bar.

From the seated area in the Balcony, signs were placed advising not to stand up during the show. Drummer Nick however wasn’t having any of that and encouraged Ricky to get audience members in the seated area to all stand up at once. In his words ‘If they all stand up together, Security can’t tell them to sit down’, as if on crowd all together jumped out of their seats and I can honestly say I have never seen Stewards move so fast to get everyone to sit down.

In all, I went to the gig with an open mind and I they blew me away. For anyone that hasn’t seen The Kaiser Chiefs live – I strongly recommend you do because they were on top form throughout the gig.
