Rewind back to The Chris Moyles Marathon show for Comic Relief – that’s the first time I heard Maverick Sabre. The minute he started singing, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up! I was amazed at how unique and soulful his voice was. From that moment on – I was a fan.
I couldn’t wait to hear the album and his debut single hadn’t been released yet. The tour was announced and tickets for Newcastle were ordered. October 15th was the original date for the gig, however due to personal reasons – the tour dates were postponed. Tuesday 1st November was the new date and I have to be honest Maverick Sabre‘s set was defiantly worth the wait.
Before Maverick Sabre took to the stage in front of his fans, two support acts got the crowd warmed up. First up was a band called Kings of the City.
Kings of the City are a London based group that consists of Ali Bla Bla, KoKen, Danny Wilder, Rich Pun, Memari Man, 8 Bit and Royal. Their music is classed as a mixture of blues, rock ‘n’ roll, hip hop and grime. From the minute they took to the small stage, they were bouncing from one end of the stage to another. At one point, I seriously thought they would fall over the drum kit!
Two songs from the set stood out to me, these being ‘I Try’ and ‘Mirage’. Don’t get me wrong, the full set was brilliant but those were the two strongest songs stood out. By the end of the set, everyone was getting more into their music.
The next support act was Delilah. She has already graced the charts with a debut single ‘Go’ – sampling the 1983 Chaka Khan hit ‘Ain’t Nobody’. As soon as the opening chords of the song started playing, Delilah had everyone singing along. Both support acts were amazing and they are defiantly acts to watch out for in the future.
Last but by no means least, was the man that everyone had gathered to see – the one and only Maverick Sabre !! Kicking off with a track called ‘Look what I’ve Done’ – Maverick was greeted by cheers from the Geordie crowd. As soon as Maverick Sabre started singing – he was on top form! The set list included ‘Sometimes’, ‘They Found Him A Gun’, ‘Let Me Go’ and his next single ‘I Need’, he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand.
To the delight of the crowd, Maverick also performed a cover of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis. The crowd happily sang along and he stood on stage and took it all in his stride. From start to finish, Maverick Sabre thrilled the crowd with his soulful voice and for me the gig ended far too soon.
I go to a lot of concerts and Maverick Sabre is by far the best live act I have ever seen. ‘I Need’ is due for release on 6th November and his debut album ‘Lonely Are The Brave’ due for release in January 2012.
